Console Wars: Who Won '08?

Despite early predictions that 2008 would be the year Sony regained momentum in the bitter video game console wars, it turned out to be false hope. Industry leader Nintendo stayed ahead of the pack all year, thoroughly dominating both the home console and handheld hardware markets with their Nintendo Wii and Nintendo DS systems, respectively.

According to NPD Group, Nintendo flat-out owned the all-important month of November by selling over 2 million Wiis, better than twice as much as the next closest competitor, Microsoft's Xbox 360 (836,000). And at over 1.5 million DS systems sold, Nintendo tripled the output of Sony's PSP (421,000). While those numbers weren't nearly that high through most of 2008, the general order -- Nintendo, Microsoft, Sony -- held strong throughout.

Wii Ascendant

But this was hardly a banner year for Nintendo in terms of software. The biggest games -- Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Mario Kart Wii and of course Wii Fit -- came relatively early in the year, and their biggest holiday release, Wii Music, has been labeled something of a dud. Miffed that the company was focusing too heavily on catering to its relatively new mass-market audience, the usually loyal Nintendo fans complained about a lack of core games. Meanwhile, Microsoft and Sony enjoyed a wealth of blockbuster games all year long, including top-sellers Grand Theft Auto IV and Fallout 3. So how did Nintendo compete, much less lead the way?

India's first hydrogen fuel pump

While conventional fuels are derived from crude oil or gas, the hydrogen fuel will use atmospheric air to synthesise pure hydrogen.

Indian Oil Corporation [Get Quote], the country's largest oil marketing company by sales, will open the country's first hydrogen fuel-dispensing station in New Delhi next month. The new-age pump will be set up in Dwarka.

"This is the culmination of a journey undertaken by IOC to diversify the energy mix of the country which ultimately results in energy security in the future," says RK Malhotra, IOC's executive director of research and development.

While conventional fossil fuels like petrol, diesel and CNG are derived from raw materials such as crude oil or gas, and mostly imported, the hydrogen fuel to be dispensed at this pump will use atmospheric air to synthesise pure hydrogen, which will be used to fuel vehicles. The process is called "electroliser" technology.

In this pic, the truck is shown is of TATA motors. TATA is an Indian truck company and more than half of the trucks in India are manufactured by this company. Also, on the truck, Natraj is written. Its name of an Indian God and is pretty common in India.

A lot of things in this screen are written in Hindi. The top most red board in right says beer in Hindi. Also the last board in right says 'hastrekha vigyan' which means 'science of palm reading'. The board above it says something in Hindi too but I cant read that.

This pic has one more board in Hindi.

SACRED 2: FALLEN ANGEL

When the original Sacred was released in 2004, it divided both the gaming community and the critics like oil and water. Those who fell under its spell of addictive, Diablo-esque combat were instantly smitten, while those expecting something with a little more depth were left sadly disappointed. Needless to say, the game fared well enough at retail to establish a passionate gamer community, and it’s this that’s paved the way to the development of a sequel – the cunningly named Sacred 2.
Sticking to the motto ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’, Sacred 2 follows pretty much the same formula as the original game, with the scale turned up way past 11. For starters, the game’s been given a stunning graphical overhaul, and is now rendered in full 3D with an array of visual effects. When you see the way rain makes the streams ripple or watch the grass sway in the breeze, it’s obvious that this a world away from the original game, with over 22 square miles of game world to explore.
Such an amount of land is a lot of ground to cover by any RPG’s standard – it’s six square miles larger than Oblivion, fact fans – but Ascaron has pulled it off well by creating a world that’s so utterly packed with things to see and do you’ll never feel lost or without purpose. Sacred’’s map is filled with dungeons, cities, bandit camps and, most importantly, enemies that need slaying, keeping you busy as you progress to the next objective. The main storyline alone consists of around 100 quests, and with hundreds of side-quests, chores and other challenges for you to complete, we’re talking about a Baldur’s Gate 2-sized adventure here – even if the story isn’t up to much.
Set in the land of Ancaria, 2,000 years before the events of the original game, Sacred 2’s storyline revolves around a mysterious substance called T-Energy – a blue goop that apparently governs all life and thought. It was once controlled exclusively by the ancient Seraphim, but as the years passed, the Seraphim grew weary and passed control over to the High Elves. However, all was not well, as a power struggle soon erupted between the different factions of High Elves. Corrupted by power, a bloody civil war developed, leaving a society in tatters and no one to govern the T-Energy. Without anyone to control it, the T-Energy transformed and spread throughout the land, turning innocent animals into mutated killing machines. And this is where you come in. full review

PSP vs. iPhone Grudge Match

So, you want a pocket-sized entertainment device that can play movies, music, and games? Right now, the two top options for you are the iPhone and the PlayStation Portable -- and each device is hungrily eyeing the other's territory. While the iPhone has been out since 2007, only last summer, with the launch of the 3G iPhone and the App Store, did the device gain the ability to download applications and play dedicated games. The PSP was released in late 2004 in Japan and 2005 around the rest of the world.
Apple is aggressively pursuing the gaming market. It has released commercials that identify the iPhone and iPod Touch as gaming devices. This is hardly Apple's first push into gaming either, as it occasionally has paid lip service to Mac owners with gaming announcements and once dipped its toes into the dedicated console pool with the now-forgotten Pippin. But this is different. The support Apple has shown to gaming on the iPhone and the amount of interest sparked around the world should make Sony very nervous. Sony does not need another successful competitor for the PSP, as it already has ample competition from the Nintendo DS.

The Zombies Look Better Every Year

THE video game industry has never been more reliable in producing high-quality mass entertainment for a variety of audiences with a variety of tastes. Three years into the current generation of game systems, developers are ceding nothing to other entertainment media in terms of high-end production values and overall attention to detail.

Gaming’s exploding worldwide popularity has forced developers to become at once more humble and more ambitious. More humble in recognizing that gamers demand quality and will not be bamboozled into throwing away their money on an undercooked product. More ambitious in recognizing that the technical resources are now available to create true high-definition interactive entertainment and in recognizing that the mainstream game audience is now sophisticated enough to appreciate nuanced, involved storytelling.

That doesn’t mean there is anything wrong with just wanting to shoot stuff sometimes. The great strength of the video game business these days is that it is catering to everyone, something I’ve seen both in the games and in the people who play them. Here then are some of the most interesting and revealing games, gaming moments and gaming trends of 2008.

BEST ZOMBIES: LEFT 4 DEAD It was a big year for the undead. I enjoyed strategically dismembering the spooky space zombies in Dead Space, but Valve, with Left 4 Dead, demonstrated why it is the premier developer of first-person shooters (sorry Id, sorry Bungie). The pacing is taut, and the game is built around the ludicrous fun of its multiplayer modes. There few extraneous design features, allowing the game to bask in the purity of the adrenaline rush it provides. (For Xbox 360 and PC.)

BEST EXPLANATION OF WHY NINTENDO HARDLY NEEDS BIG GAMES ANYMORE: THE WII The only constituency of gamer with a legitimate gripe for feeling a bit neglected this holiday season is the hard-core Nintendo fan: you know, the Zelda expert, the Mario savant. Those players are finally coming to realize that Nintendo does not need to fawn over them anymore because the rest of the planet, which has never even heard of Zelda, is still clamoring for the Wii. I’ve seen it all year. My middle-age downstairs neighbor asked me to help her find two copies of Wii Fit so she could send them to relatives in Puerto Rico. Over a rainy summer weekend on Long Island, an entire house full of highly paid finance professionals spent almost every waking moment in a rotating Wii bowling and tennis tournament. (I could make any number of jokes about the September crash but will refrain.) These kinds of people don’t even consider themselves gamers, but they are why Nintendo can get away with neglecting its core fans. For now.

BEST EMBRACE OF DEMOCRACY, FLAWED AS IT IS: EVE ONLINE This year CCP of Iceland (another potential finance joke sidestepped) invited the more than 200,000 players of Eve Online to vote for nine representatives from around the world to convey their concerns and suggestions about the game to the company. That alone was innovative. Then the company flew them to Iceland to sit down for a few days with the game’s developers. The company has committed to repeating the process about every six months, which makes this an idea that ought to spread beyond the game world. Maybe Microsoft should allow Windows users to vote for an officially recognized gripe committee. Maybe the airlines could have their chief executives sit down with an elected panel of frequent flyers twice a year. Hey, who says games can’t make the world a better place?

Interesting Google Fact

Did you know that 20% of the queries Google receives each day are ones that have not been seen in the last 90 days, if at all?
What does that mean?
By my back of the napkin calculations, based on comScore monthly search volume estimates for Google.com (not entire Google network, just Google.com) of around 8 billion searches (around 266,666,667 searches a day) that means there is over:
53 million new search terms entered in to Google every single day!

Tokyo Metro is trying to improve the travelling environment for all who use their subway trains by improving peoples manners. They decided that the best way to do this was through a poster campaign which seems to be taking an exaggerated and slightly comical look at bad manners that people tend to have taken to on the metro.

Review of GSM/UMTS-smartphone Nokia 5800 XpressMusic (Tube)

Positioning

In our reports from the 5800 Tube's launch event we touched upon its positioning, but now we are willing to go more in-depth and give you the big picture.

Nokia Remix – Nokia 5800 exposed

We've all been waiting for this - a touch-sensitive phone from Nokia. And the more they hyped the fabulous Apple iPhone, the more anxious everyone had been growing. Having launched a PR campaign of immense power Apple did not hesitate to take on Nokia on its very own turf. But Nokia have got some trumps up their sleeves as well, and among them are several solutions that will leave the whole Cupertino sleepless. That is, Nokia Music Store may not seem like much and doesn't look any better than Sony Ericsson's PlayNow service, but Nokia has in fact added a whole new dimension to it by bringing about Nokia Comes with Music campaign that allows the users of select phones to enjoy free subscription to a vast music database. Furthermore, you can store all tracks you've downloaded on PC and listen to them as long as you want. So, this is "strike one" that puts the business model of iTunes in question and makes it less of a monopoly on today's market. But such a powerful service calls for some capable hardware - specifically, music-minded mobile phones. As you probably have guessed, Nokia has tackled this issue with its latest and greatest 5800 Xpress Music.

We already posted an in-depth story about Nokia Comes with Music a while ago, so in case you missed it for some reason, I strongly recommend that you read it.

Nokia Comes with Music

Moreover, we will put up a review of Nokia Comes with Music the day after it kicks off on October 16th, so we invite you to visit Mobile-Review.com for more info and hands-on impressions with this service.

Although it may seem Nokia have designed the 5800 exclusively for their online music service, it's not quite true. This phone targets all other touchscreen offerings around, including Windows Mobile, Apple iPhone and some dedicated audio players delivered by smaller companies. Basically, Nokia have dropped the price of the 5800 Tube to the point where no one will even want to compete on price or won't have the means to offer a similarly geared solution for this money. But Nokia's real intention behind this sensationally low price tag (by the way, they are still going to make good money off it) is to clean up the whole industry a little bit. Apparently, half-dead manufacturers focusing on touch-sensitive solutions and marketing them at higher price points due to lack of competition won't be able to survive the arrival of the 5800 XpressMusic. However, those who will find a way to adjust without altering their pricing policies will be knocked out early in 2009 by another announcement - without going into much detail, I can say that those 279 Euros for the Nokia 5800 aren't exactly the bottom line for this type of phones; effectively they can go much lower than that.

These days Nokia hardly faces any competition on the mobile phone market - Samsung are capitalizing on the weakness of the rest of the field, and although they've been trying to back it up with pretty decent offerings too, they don't interact with local carriers just as much. So, Nokia's real challenges lie in services and music; obviously, it's impossible not to mention iTues in this regard. Basically, every Apple-branded phone or players comes bundled with iTunes and there is no other way around. Nokia, however, has learned a lesson from Apple's experience and is now looking to take on Apple's offerings on their own turf. How? By now probably everyone knows that the stellar sales generated by the original iPhone in the US were more due to the demand they had to meet in other regions. Apple closed their eyes to all leaks and in an effort to encourage these activities, they supplied "right" people with their firmware encryption codes that essentially made the whole jailbreak hysteria possible (although these days it's nearly impossible to break the iPhone 3G's software). Previously Apple needed to put up great numbers and turn the market in their favor, but that was stage one. The second part of the plan, which is unfolding these days, is supposed to bring the iPhone brand back to the top price bracket. And that's exactly the moment when Nokia chimes in with its underpriced finger-friendly devices, leaving Apple very few ways to retaliate - one of them would be to send the iPhone's pricing through the floor (thankfully, it's not all that popular in Europe). Without a price cut their whole campaign in Europe will come to a halt in a year or two. On the other hand, with unlimited music subscription and a more able device (in terms of core functionality), Nokia won't allow an alternative to come along any time soon.

Now, several words about the phone itself. They call it "feminine", "teenager-ish" and a whole bunch of other ways. But nobody is trying to conceal the fact that it's aimed primarily at the younger audience, although even people past their thirties should be pretty content with the 5800 XpressMusic as well (we'll see some more imposing offerings of this breed down the road, though). Those who are into innovations and cutting-edge gadgets won't be put off by the Nokia 5800's simplistic design. And on the other hand, people who shun touch-sensitive screens won't even think of the 5800 as a possible way to go. This way, Nokia will never face the risk of letting the sales of their conventional smartphones plummet in favor of the 5800 XpressMusic. It's quite another matter, though, that with the arrival of this phone they will have to give up on several music-minded offerings given the price tag of the 5800 Tube.

That said, the Nokia 5800's positioning shouldn't take a rocket scientist to figure out - it's simply the most feature-rich and affordable touchscreen device with a focus on music. Furthermore, you won't find any other phone that can come close to it in terms of price/quality ratio. Windows Mobile devices are by no means "multimedia-ready", so the only other way to go is the Apple iPhone - however, retailing for twice as much, it's not much of a mobile phone per se. And the Nokia 5800 makes it clear that the real price of the Apple iPhone 3G should revolve around 300-350 USD before subsidies. All in all, I suggest we wait until December and see how Apple will alter their pricing policy in view of Nokia's latest efforts on the touchscreen playground.

Again, I never tire to emphasize the following - the 5800 Xpress Music is nothing but Nokia's first step in this segment, and we'll see more of them down the road. What Nokia is really up to is defeat the myth that touch-friendly phones are always on the expensive side - they know it's all nonsense and they are building up a mass market for this type of solutions. And they seem to be doing pretty well, considering how much arguments and feedback their latest release has sparked up.

Design, Size, Controls

The 5800 XpressMusic is a pretty much standard plasticky candy-bar without any metallic or chromed accents in it. The build quality, however, was pretty good - we didn't find any parts on it that would creak when pressed or feel wobbly (just as you'd expect from this design, though). Also, there is nothing wrong with the 5800 Tube utilizing only plastic parts - some more expensive offerings don't have any metallic accents either and somehow this fact doesn't turn many off. Apparently, since the Nokia 5800 doesn't have any other newsworthy drawbacks, its haters will be looking for any opportunity to blame it for not having metallic parts in its design. I especially like some "qualified" opinions of people who haven't even touched the 5800 yet, but for some reason feel competent enough to share their point of view. Here are some gems:

  • It's a plasticky made-in-China toy;
  • All other touchscreen phones are made of metal, the 5800 is not - why?;
  • It looks and feels so cheap!;

Thankfully, though, these mumblings have absolutely nothing to do with how things really stand. As far as materials are concerned, the Nokia 5800 has nothing to shout about, but at the same time it doesn't expose any crucial letdowns.

The phone measures in at 111x51.7x15.5 mm and tips our scales at 109 grams. Let's put it up against some other today's offerings to see how it is "too small" or "way too bulky", "feminine" or whatever:

Nokia 5800
Motorola ZN5
Sony Ericsson W902
Apple iPhone 3G
Samsung PIXON M8800

111x51.7x15.5 mm, 109 g
118x50.5x16 mm, 114 g
110x49x11.7 mm, 100g
115.5x62.1x12.3 mm, 133 g
107.9x54.6x13.8 mm, 124 g

I suppose the numbers above are more informative than any words - the 5800 is reasonably wide and not overly fat (which some tend to groundlessly blame it for). All in all, in terms of size it's a typical candybar of 2008. It also features a lanyard eyelet that can be used to attach what Nokia calls "stylus plectrum" (comes with a strap on it). I'm pretty positive that some girls will use it as a wrist strap.
