Google's AdSense As Content Distribution Network

Google has experimented, not that successfully, to distribute video content through its AdSense network and monetize it, most notably with MTV. IT has now tied up with Seth MacFarlane, creator of "Family Guy" on Fox, to launch a new project called "Seth MacFarlane's Cavalcade of Cartoon Comedy." This animation series will only be distributed through this AdSense for video program, to "thousands of Web sites that are predetermined to be gathering spots for Mr. MacFarlane's target audience," as NYT puts it. There will be 50 two-minute episodes, and MacFarlane has created a stable of new characters to star in the series.
As for monetizing it, there will be prerolls, an an option for a banner to be placed at the bottom of the video clip or a simple "brought to you by" note at the beginning. MacFarlane will get a cut of the revenues.

Microsoft to stop selling Windows XP on Monday

Microsoft Corp. is scheduled to stop selling its Windows XP operating system to retailers and major computer makers Monday, despite protests from a slice of PC users who don't want to be forced into using XP's successor, Vista.

Once computers loaded with XP have been cleared from the inventory of PC makers such as Dell Inc. and Hewlett-Packard Co., consumers who can't live without the old operating system on their new machine will have to buy Vista Ultimate or Vista Business and then legally "downgrade" to XP.

Microsoft will still allow smaller mom-and-pop PC builder shops to buy XP for resale through the end of January. A version of XP will also remain available for ultra-low-cost PCs such as the Asus Eee PC.

A group of vocal computer users who rallied around a "Save XP" petition posted on the industry news site InfoWorld had been clamoring for Microsoft to keep selling XP until its next operating system, Windows 7, is available. The software maker has said it expects to release Windows 7 sometime in 2009.

Last week, Microsoft said it would provide full technical support for six-year-old Windows XP through 2009, and limited support through 2014.

Get ready : DIABLO 3 is coming

The ice sheath splash has finally melted, it's now official, and while I'm not exactly barreled over by the announcement because I've always felt a trifle conflicted about the merits of the Diablo series, I'm definitely intrigued.

What I (and plenty of others) speculated might happen came to pass at approximately 12:18 p.m. on June 28th at the Blizzard Worldwide Invitational in Paris, France, where Blizzard finally confirmed that yes, Diablo 3 is in the works, eight prolonged years after Diablo 2, and over a decade after the original gave oceans of relentless finger-tappers a conduit for their compulsion.

What else do we know so far? Not much, but Blizzard says it's going to be the biggest Diablo yet, that it's going to retain the series focus on cooperative play, and that it'll feature the return of Deckard Cain (the old dude from the last two who crooned "Stay a while, and listen!" when you clicked him). You'll also get a new class called the Witch Doctor who'll have access to jungle magic and be able to summon animals and insects, inflict diseases, and mind-control enemies.

As the game is now finally fully 3D, you'll be able to zoom in or out on the fly. The interface has been unsurprisingly tweaked with onscreen hotbars for skills as well as the option to swap between them quickly with the tab key or your mousewheel. Instead of quaffing potions like Professor Snape on a bender, you'll roll over red orbs to replenish your health. Environments can be pretty thoroughly pulverized, as well as utilized to effect the destruction of enemies. Certain enemies will be considerably larger, finally filling the screen like proper boss monsters. Armor now relates to class and renders uniquely depending on the character wearing it. And girls, you'll finally have the option to pick female versions of character classes, including the Barbarian and Witch Doctor.

GOOGLE launches new media server app.

Google just came forward with its new Google Media Server, a Windows application which allows users to share personal files or online content found on Google services ( such as YouTube or Picasa Web Albums),  with a series of UPnP compatible devices, including the PlayStation 3 and the XBox 360.

The application works with Google Desktop technology: the administration tool uses Desktop gadgets and for locating media files the app uses Google Desktop Search. In order to run the Media Server, only two things are needed: a PC with Google Desktop and UPnP-enabled device. Once this is taken care of, users will be able to access their PC-stocked video, audio and photo content.

Google’s plans include serious video advertising projects; Eric Schmidt, company CEO, said earlier this month that Google intends to make some money out of YouTube, but hasn’t yet figured out how to do so. YouTube was purchased by Google for a whopping $1.6 billion, but up to this point, the investment hasn’t brought in any profits. Meanwhile, the site has proven to eat out most of Google’s outgoing bandwidth.

With the new Google Media Server, the PC-TV gap was bridged and with the help of YouTube’s huge popularity, online videos will surely find themselves played on TVs everywhere in no time.

However, things are not going to come easy. The company may find itself in a tricky situation upon an attempt to get companies to place ads according to target demographics. Even though the number of people posting or just viewing clips on YouTube is quite impressive, the content is so unstructured, that making a demographic study about what kind of people watch which kind of clips is next to impossible.

Now .smith, .sports or .love on the web

Internet regulators on Thursday voted to relax rules on domain name like .com .edu which could pave the way for companies or individuals to create an array of new addresses for the web.

The Internet corporation for assigned names and numbers, or ICANN, also approved measures that will allow top-level domain names in script such as ARABIC or CYRILLIC.

Top=level domain names or TLDs, refer to Internet name suffixes such as the ubiquitous .com .net and .org among others. Currently there are more than 200 top-level domain names which also include the two character country codes used by websites, such as Britain’s .uk.

ICANN officials said some technical issues for the new system must be worked out, but it could be reviewing the first applications for new TLDs as early as next spring.

The application fee is expected to be $100,000. Individuals, companies or group could apply to have any string of letters established as a domain name. It could be a vanity name, for example-.smith-or a category name like .sports or .perfume. A company could also change to reflect its brand, so Apple.com could become Apple.mac, for instance. Straight forward applications will be approved quickly. A review process would be undertaken for controversial strings.
