The Top 5 Coolest Things About the New Xbox Experience

By now you've had a little bit of time to mess around with the New Xbox Experience. Sure, you already know about the full size Mii's...er...avatars and streaming videos from Netflix, but after sorting through about a hundred new blades, what does Microsoft's latest update really have to offer?

GamePro Arcade is here to help. Listed below are the Top 5 coolest features of the New Xbox Experience. Make sure you take advantage of them.

Avatars - Get over the fact that they're a Mii rip off, the Xbox avatars are a nice new feature and are a natural fit with the always community friendly 360. Players can already use their avatars in four games (Uno, Scene It: Box Office Smash, Hardwood Hearts, and A Kingdom for Keflings), and on the Friends blade you can take a look at all your buddies avatars and see who they're playing and/or partying with as a picture sits behind them. The customization is pretty limited at the moment (Where's the curly hair? Why can't I wear a Master Chief helmet? When will I get to wear a skeleton costume like the Cobra Kai's on Halloween?) but I'm sure more options will be available soon...for a price. full post here

Microsoft Launches Hardware to Complement Vista

To complement its Windows Vista operating system, software giant Microsoft Corporation recently launched its latest suite of hardware products composed of two mouse pads, a keyboard and a webcam. In a press briefing last week, Katherine Teu, regional marketing manager of Microsoft Hardware Southeast Asia, said the products were made with a combination of innovation, style, and functionality aimed at delivering high performance and comfortable use, be it for work or entertainment.

Teu said the products were designed to enhance the PC user’s experience and complement the capabilities of its Windows Vista operating system.

Showcased during the launch at the Xbox room of Microsoft Philippines office in Makati City, are: the next-generation Explorer Mice with Blue Track Technology; the Arc Mouse, and the SideWinder X6 Keyboard.

Teu claimed the new keyboard is the “most versatile” gaming keyboard in the market today, while she described the Arc Mouse as “fashionable and functional.”

“At Microsoft, we are constantly looking for ways to make computing easier and faster,” she said. “We are excited to bring the latest Microsoft Hardware products to consumers here in the Philippines to meet the ever-changing business requirements of local companies across all industries.”

Blue Track Technology

Along with the release of the hardware products, the company is also introducing Microsoft BlueTrack Technology, an advanced tracking technology which, the company claims, allows consumers to take their “mice” anywhere and work with confidence on virtually any surface — be it a rough kitchen countertop, an uneven park bench or the living room carpet. Blue Track combines the width and power of optical technology with the precision of laser tracking to allow consumers to mouse freely on more surfaces than before.

“Research shows that people aren’t sitting at a desk all day, but they’ve gone mobile. PC shipments today are being driven by laptops and consumers need a mouse that can go with them anywhere,” Teu explained. “BlueTrack Technology excels in areas where optical and laser technologies were falling short. Laser mice, for example, have a difficult time working on some common home surfaces, including granite and marble.”

BlueTrack Technology will debut in the new high-end Microsoft Explorer Mini Mouse. The latter, pairs revolutionary tracking technology with a sophisticated design which brings the mice to life. A chrome trim and blue lighting around the bottom rim of the mouse create a soft glow.

Meanwhile, the Arc Mouse with its revolutionary design, such as its foldable shape, combines the comfort of a desktop mouse with the portability of a notebook mouse. Its shape is thin crescent and is available in two color options — black and red.

However, Teu reported that the Sidewinder X6 Keyboard is the most versatile gaming keyboard in the market with the first-ever switchable key pad that can be attached to the left or right side of the keyboard for ultimate flexibility.

Tailor-fitted for gaming, Teu said the keyboard also has productivity features as it functions as a standard num pad in normal keyboard mode, but becomes a programmable macro pad in game mode. Its switchable key pad allows gamers to program up to 90 macros per game with the help of a set of dedicated macro keys as well as a fully programmable key pad. With mode switching, gamers can instantly go from Microsoft Office Excel to their favorite game — and place the macro pad on whichever side they prefer for gaming.

Yet Microsoft’s new webcam the LifeCam Show, is described to be one of the sleekest webcams today with a mirrored finish and ultra thin design. The product displays a new attachment system that includes a laptop clip, desktop stand and two attachment discs, allowing the webcam to be used with any computer.

And with a 2.0-megapixel (MP) video sensor; 8.0MP stills; glass element, wide-angle lens; and outstanding low-light performance, LifeCam Show promises to deliver vibrant, rich video and picture quality that is always focused.

Search in Windows 7 will go beyond local

In August, Windows Search 4.0 (WS4) was released to the masses. According to recent tests, the performance improvements were significant: 26 percent faster for Windows XP and 84 percent for Windows Vista. We already know that WS4 will be bundled in Vista SP2, so it’s natural to expect that the Windows 7 Find and Organize team is using WS4 as the base for further improvements.

But the team won’t be limited to performance tweaks. When Vista was released, its search features were significantly better than XP’s. It’s time to take a look at what Microsoft is planning to do for search for Windows 7; according to information Microsoft has released to developers, search in Windows 7 can go beyond a local network:

Windows 7 supports searching for documents beyond the user’s own PC. Developers and IT professionals can enable their search engines, document repositories, web applications, and proprietary data stores to be searched from Windows 7 without needing to write and deploy client code. This enables end users to search their corporate intranet or the web as easily as they can search for their local files—all from within the same familiar Windows interface.

Furthermore, developers can add Windows 7 compatible OpenSearch support to any existing searchable web application by adding RSS or ATOM output (the desktop client can then have a Search Connector for the service). SharePoint Search Server can also query these compatible OpenSearch services (as shown at PDC 2008).

Microsoft released this information early so that developers can get a head start on creating their own search plug-ins. This is mainly aimed at enterprises, but it can be used in consumer situations as well. For example, Microsoft blogger Long Zheng has already put together a Windows 7 Search Connector for Flickr. Imagine being able to search through pictures, videos, and other files on your favorite repositories, all from Windows Explorer.

Windows Vista, Multimedia Codec Vulnerabilities Found

Security researchers at Phion AG, an Austrian firewall company, report that Windows Vista has a TCP/IP vulnerability that could allow a local attacker to take control of an affected system. The vulnerability has been tested on Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT) Windows Vista Enterprise (32-bit and 64-bit) and Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate (32-bit and 64-bit). The researches consider it likely that other versions of Vista are affected. Windows XP, however, is not affected.

In our Chalk Talk with Avocent CTO Ben Grimes, we get a first-hand look at some of the challenges with managing power, including a look at some of the tools Avocent offers to help with this.
Certain administrative rights are required for the vulnerability to be exploited. This makes it a risk primarily in malicious insider scenarios.

“To execute either the sample program or the route-add command, the user has to be member of the Network Configuration Operators group or the Administrators group,” the security advisory explains. “Since this buffer overflow overwrites kernel memory, it could be possible that members of the Network Configuration Operator group exploit this and take control over the operating system without any restriction.”

The advisory states that Phion notified Microsoft on Oct. 22. It’s not immediately clear when Microsoft will address the issue. In any event, Phion’s advisory includes details about a temporary fix.

Meanwhile, Vietnamese security research group Bach Khoa Internetwork Security (BKIS) has identified a buffer overflow vulnerability in the open source ffdshow multimedia codec that can be used compromise computers using any Internet browser in which the Windows Media Player plug-in has been installed.

The flaw has to do with the way the ffdshow software handles media streams. Upon parsing an extremely long link, ffdshow runs out of memory and returns a buffer-overflow error. This could be exploited by an attacker to execute remote code on the victim’s computer.

A person visiting a malicious Web site using a browser with the vulnerable codec installed would be subject to attack without further action.

BKIS says that users should update to the latest version of ffdshow. That includes those using software packages that make use of ffdshow, like K-Lite Codec Pack, XP Codec Pack, Vista Codec Package, and Codec Pack All in one.

Windows 7: Vista minus the nagging

In recent weeks I’ve had the chance to chat with many Windows admins about the tech media’s unfair treatment of Windows Vista and Windows 7. These are well-known Windows experts such as Jeremy Moskowitz, creator of PolicyPak, and well-respected journalists such as Greg Shields, who is taking aim at InfoWorld’s “patently biased” Windows 7 compatibility calculator this week in his Realtime Community blog.

Now Derek Melber, a true legend in the field of Windows know-how and technical training, is fuming over ignorant comments regarding the UAC (User Account Control) technology in Vista and Windows 7.

For those of you who aren’t aware of Derek Melber, here is a mini-bio: Derek Melber, MVP, MCSE, and author of BrainCore.Net, is one of only a few Group Policy MVPs in the world. His most recent book, “Windows Group Policy Resource Kit: Windows Server 2008 and Windows Vista” published by Microsoft Press, provides in-depth information on the new Group Policy Preferences that control all Windows desktops back to Windows XP SP2. He provides custom training and education on Windows AD, Group Policy, and security. You can reach him at derekm@braincore.net.

[ Measured by runtime specs and performance benchmarks, Windows 7 and Windows Vista are a nearly identical match, although in all honesty we are dealing with a pre-Beta. | If Windows 7 is a dead end (and it’s too far off from release date to say that it is), what’s next? Several new personal computing paradigms are emerging. ]

If anyone has the inside scoop on UAC, it would be Derek. And with this technology getting so much bad press, I asked Derek a few questions about its implementation in Vista and in Windows 7.

JPB: Derek, there’s no escaping the fact that users have plenty of complaints regarding UAC in Vista. What is your overall view of the problem and how do you think Microsoft is going to address it?

Derek Melber: Windows Vista has had a bad rap since the Beta phases due to the User Account Control prompts. Microsoft is fully aware of the industry view on the UAC prompts and is taking action to get a solution to the problem, sooner rather than later. As a Vista user for the past year, I have trained myself to click the Continue button without much thought when UAC prompts me to elevate an application, OS function, or installation that requires Administrative privileges. I do suggest the use of Windows Vista for all IT administrators, while the use of Vista for end-users is still a variable. For those of you who have successfully held out on moving to Windows Vista, you might want to keep an eye out for Windows 7, which is the next version of the Windows client.

Microsoft Windows 7 UAC

JPB: Why do you feel IT Administrators should use Windows Vista today?

Derek Melber: The reason IT admins should use Windows Vista with UAC today is quite simple. When an administrator is logged on to perform routine “employee” tasks, the credentials of the logged on user should be that of a “standard user.” Most administrators have a single user account, which has membership in the Domain Admins or worse, Enterprise Admins, group. When browsing the Internet, performing routine tasks, checking e-mail, etc., if the user has administrative privileges, so does the malware, virus, or other malicious code that is running without the administrator’s knowledge.

Windows Vista eliminates risk by forcing all users — administrators and end-users alike — to run as a “standard user.” Then, when a task, application, installation, etc. that requires elevation is run, the user is prompted for consent or credentials (if UAC is configured to prompt). It is this prompting that informs administrators of code that is trying to perform an action which only administrators should be able to do. This would include writing to the system files or Registry.

Another way that Vista with UAC helps administrators is by configuring IE 7 to run in Protected Mode. Protected Mode runs the user as a “standard user” and IE with low Integrity level. It also virtualizes user-specific files away from the system files. If you have ever been browsing a perceived “safe Web site” and had the UAC prompt come up, you should be very glad you had it running!

JPB: Which end-users should use Windows Vista?

Derek Melber: The issue of end-users running with UAC enabled is a bit more difficult to swallow. This is because you don’t want your end-users running as administrators, having administrative privileges, or being provided with the Administrator password. Therefore, if you have end-users that do not run applications or functions or perform installations that require administrative privileges, Vista is a perfect solution. All of the benefits that I mentioned above for IT admins will also benefit end-users.

However, if you have end-users that run applications or OS functions or perform installations that require administrative privileges, you might find that using UAC causes some issues, since the end-user will either need to have the credentials of an administrator-type account or be placed in the Administrators group to perform their tasks. Either way, end-users running with administrative privileges is a death wish for any company.

One alternative to fixing the end-user issue where they are required to run applications requiring administrative privileges is to use a tool that elevates the user when running these applications. Tools such as BeyondTrust Privilege Manager allow end-users to run as a standard user until they need to perform an administrative task. Note that Microsoft’s Standard User Analyzer, found in the Application Compatibility Toolkit, can assist with users performing administrative tasks.

[ BeyondTrust Privilege Manager received a 2008 InfoWorld Technology of the Year Award. See Test Center’s review. ]

JPB: OK, so now for the big question. What is changing in Windows 7 UAC?

Derek Melber: According to all of the public information coming from Redmond on Windows 7, Microsoft is taking aim at the most complained-about features in Windows Vista. Primarily, the UAC prompts are supposed to be reduced dramatically. According to Ben Fathi, Microsoft corporate vice president of development, Windows core operating system division, UAC in Windows 7 will “broaden the control you have over the UAC notifications” and “provide additional and more relevant information in the user interface” for UAC prompts. For example, when the administrator of the Windows Vista computer launches Active Directory Users and Computers for the 10th time before lunch, there should be some heuristic logic in the computer to realize that this activity is routine and should be allowed without a prompt for consent.

The overall protection that UAC provides will not be altered. Therefore, all users will run as “standard user” until a task needing elevation is launched, then UAC will kick in providing the elevation to administrators and either denying the standard user access or prompting them for credentials of an administrator account.

JPB: Last week I wrote that all Windows 7 articles are a waste of time. I also noted that Windows 7 coverage comes in only two flavors: either a Microsoft-hating rant or a glowing endorsement through rose-colored glasses. How do you see it?

Derek Melber: Windows Vista gets a bad rap due to UAC. There is no question that it could be better, but the security that UAC provides for both admins and end-users far outweighs the negatives that UAC prompts pose. However, there are other reasons to stay clear of Windows Vista, such as driver and application compatibility issues. If you can run Vista, you should! If you still are apprehensive, Microsoft hears you and is making the appropriate changes in Windows 7 to make UAC prompts less intrusive, but still provide the security benefits that Windows Vista provides today.

Internal Blizzard Team Won’t Be Making CGI For ‘World of Warcraft’ Movie

With the news today that the “World of Warcraft” expansion “Wrath of the Lich King” sold 2.8 million copies within its first 24 hours of release, we can only wonder what’s next for Blizzard’s flagship franchise.

At the New York City launch event last week, Blizzard CEO Mike Morhaime did tell me to expect another expansion in about a year, and executive VP of product development Frank Pearce gave an update on the “World of Warcraft” movie currently in development.

Legendary Pictures is currently trying to assign some names to write the screenplay and find someone to direct it, so it’s still really early in production,” Pearce said. “They want to make sure they get the right talent for those different parts, especially the screenwriting, because that’s the foundation for the movie.”full article

Finalized speedy USB 3.0 spec debuts

25GB in 70 seconds. That’s the torrid transfer rate consumers can expect with devices based on the USB 3.0 specification, which debuted Monday.
USB 3.0 SuperSpeed logo as shown at WinHEC 2008. As reported previously, the USB Promoter Group finalized the “SuperSpeed” USB 3.0 specification today and is doing a “comprehensive review” of the technology at a conference in San Jose, Calif.

Intel, Microsoft, Texas Instruments, and NEC are the leading players in the group.

Among the initial devices, external solid-state (flash) drives and hard drives are expected to be popular. “The first SuperSpeed USB devices will likely include data storage devices such as flash (solid-state drives), external hard drives, digital music players, and digitial cameras,” the group said.

Products aren’t coming until 2010, however. “It is anticipated that initial SuperSpeed USB discrete controllers will appear in the second half of 2009 and consumer products will appear in 2010,” according to the group.

“The USB 3.0 Promoter Group is now accepting adopters of the USB 3.0 specification, which has been finalized at the 1.0 level,” the group added.

As its name (SuperSpeed) implies, USB 3.0 is all about speed. About 10 times more speed, to be exact, than the 2.0 specification.

Here’s data from a slide that Microsoft showed at WinHEC 2008 on November 6:

Transfer of a 25GB HD movie:

* USB 1.0: 9.3 hours
* USB 2.0: 13.9 minutes
* USB 3.0: 70 seconds

But the new specification is a long time in coming. USB 2.0 was launched almost eight years ago. At WinHEC, Microsoft expressed caution about USB 3.0 because finalization has taken so long. Because of delays, “we’re challenged and we won’t have support for USB 3.0 in Windows 7 at RTM (release to manufacturing),” Lars Giusti of Microsoft said earlier this month.

“If you look at the USB 3.0 industry timelines and checkpoints, it really has been a very long, difficult and challenging three-year effort,” he added.

Currently, Microsoft is trying to figure out whether it should support USB 3.0 in Vista or just later operating systems.

Left 4 dead Game review

Up until recently, multiplayer has carried with it the assumption that we just want to duke it out against our fellow gamers to prove our digital dominance. But at long last, the joys of co-operative multiplayer have made their mainstream surge in a variety of recent titles; including Red Alert 3, Call of Duty: World at War, Resistance 2 and of course, Left 4 Dead. As the game’s title (not so) cunningly suggests, the game revolves around a four player co-op experience.
For fans of B-grade zombie films this is a must-play if only for the myriad of genre in-jokes that infest the game more frequently than the hordes of zombies you must fight off. Make no mistake, Valve wants you to approach this game as if it’s the ultimate, interactive zombie film. When you start up a level you’re greeted with a movie poster that shows-off everything from production credits and lame tagline, to the player name’s and what character’s they are playing as. Whenever a campaign is completed credits roll and begin with a dedication to whatever players didn’t escape the chapter. Right from the get-go Valve has you feeling like part of the whole experience and it doesn’t slow down.full review

The Best Undiscovered Playstation 2 (PS2) Games

f you’ve played all the blockbuster games on the PS2 (or PS3) already and need to dig into the lesser-known-but-equally-exciting games, this is the guide for you.  I’ve had long discussions with many experienced PS2 owners in order to determine a list of all the best PS2 games that most people haven’t played (or possibly even heard of).  Much like previous entries in the Hidden Gems series, this guide is divided up by genre to help you find games that suit your tastes.

Since the PS2 library is so immense and filled with so many wonderful titles (and also has had a lot of exposure over the years), I wanted to get more particular about which games I include in this Hidden Gems feature.   If I were to have compiled this a year or two ago, you would have seen a number of titles that have since gained popularity and edged into mainstream.  The games I’m thinking of include Katamari Damacy, Shadow of the Colossus, the Viewtiful Joe Series, Disgea, Okami, Odin Sphere, Guilty Gear, Beyond Good & Evil, and Rez.  So when you notice I don’t list these games below, you’ll know why.  Instead I hope you find a number of games that you haven’t heard of (or at least not much) that catch your eye and eventually provide you with hours of enjoyment.. full article

Picasa Web Albums Gets Face Recognition

Google has launched a one-two combo of Picasa 3.0 (beta), the next generation of its free photo-editing software, along with a major technology upgrade to its free online photo-sharing site, Picasa Web Albums.
Picasa Web Albums now helps users automatically sort and share their online photos based on who is in each picture. Instead of requiring users to label their photos one-by-one, the 'name tags' feature in Picasa Web Albums uses advanced clustering technology to quickly group together pictures of the same person.
It also features a remodeled user interface, and uses new technology to help users organize and share photos.
Users can share full-resolution albums for free with friends and family and the web albums are viewable as full-window slideshows that load in the background so users can flip quickly from one photo to the next.
A new 'Explore' section gives users a way to enjoy photos published by other Google Photos users around the world, including a 'Where in the World' game in which you guess the mystery locales of geo-tagged photos.
New features in Picasa 3 make getting photos online easier, with a one-click 'web sync' that uploads an album and keeps it updated on the web when changes are made on the PC.
New tools also include a drag-and-drop photo-collage tool ; a retouching brush to wipe out scratches and blemishes, and repair old photos; a slideshow movie maker that uploads to YouTube with a click; Auto red-eye removal; Smart auto-cropping and a fast-launching Photo Viewer to inspect and manipulate images while in the Windows filesystem.

GC 2008: 160GB PS3 Bundle Coming Soon

It seems both Sony and Microsoft never grow tired of re-bundling their beloved consoles! A new 160GB PS3 Bundle will hit the market soon in North America, which will include a copy of Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune (one of the first few games to get Trophy Support, in case you Trophy whores haven’t already heard), a voucher that’ll let you download the PlayStation Network title 'PAIN', and a DualShock 3 controller.

Unfortunately, the features will be the same as the 80GB PS3, which means there will be no backward compatibility. The bundle will be available for $499.99 when it arrives this November.

Don't Buy IPhone 3G!!

apple-iphone-3g-black

People planning to buy a iPhone.....Please go through this first.I got this as a forwarded mail and I m posting it here, just to make sure that you will be aware of it and you atleast can enquire before buying it. Belive me I can't assure you the credibility fo the following content, but I am publishing since I heard from my friend who is in US, IPhone 3g was a huge failure there, so they are pushing the pieces to Indian market since we Indians are crazy about those phones. Thats why they are selling it around 12k bucks.
BEWARE OF BUYING iPhone3G
Friends .....those of you in India planning for iPhone... THINK TWICE BEFOREMAKING A DECISION... The short comings of iPhone are endless...
>> No video calling
>> no AD2P on the Bluetooth
>> Can't share any (mp3, images,videos....) files via bluetooth
>> can't use as a wireless modem,(you pay ridiculous data charges to activate internet on your phone, but cannot connect it to your PC and browse when you are at home)
>> no copy and paste,(cannot copy a part of a.... say.... email & send it....have to type it out yourself)
>> no 3.2 or 5 megapixel camera(the 2MP camera it carries is worst camera i've ever seen..... photos look like they have come out of a VGA camera)
>> no video recording with camera
>> no front camera
>>no flash
>>no JAVA support
>>No physical keyboard (BELIEVE me! this alone is a dealbreaker...touch keyboard as good as it looks...once you use it then only you come to know about the importance of having a hard keypad)
>> No 3G network yet in India..so why pay for expensive 3G phone if you cant use its 3G services ... so, for India, iPhone 2.0 is no better than its first version
>> No removable battery. (You cannot change battery. Have to send it to apple outlet.. Come on now!!!!...This is not an iPod Its a bloody phone. You cannot live without phone for 2-3 days)
>> No haptic feedback
>> cannot send MMS
>> can't use as external storage device (16 GB of utter waste..next time you go to your friend's house & find some interesting songs, movies etc...sorry you cannot connect your '16 GB' phone and share it!!!! Apple apparently has a solution.. " BUY MUSIC & MOVIES FROM iTUNES STORE "..... Give me a break will you APPLE!!!)
>> no FM radio
>> can't use your mp3 files as ringtones,(This is heights man!!!)
>> cannot insert any other SIM card….
>> completely tied to iTunes... Connect to your friend's iTunes & you risk erasing everything on your phone.

Note:IF U LIKE THIS THEN PLZ PRESS CTRL+D TO BOOKMARK THIS PAGE.

list goes on & on & on…

We Indians are used to these features. Most of our phones already have thesefeatures. & we cannot do with out them.... i mean can you imagine paying somuch for a phone with which you cannot transfer files via bluetooth. whatage is this ...STONE AGE???
Some features may be activated by jailbreak.. But why the hell should yourisk losing your warranty after paying so much.
And want to add third party softwares??.. YOU HAVE TO BUY THEM FROM iTUNESSTORE ONLY!!! . (Shell out more money). Apple is a bloody control freak.Dont surrender your freedom to it.
Its good for american market (who have no idea what mobile freedom/choiceis) which is in stone age compared to asian/european markets. When they wantto buy a phone, they have to go to network operators and buy only thosephones that are available on that network. & stick to that company tilltheir contract expires. You want to change carriers? Not before payingdamages, & buying another phone on the other network again.
On the contrary, we in India have so much freedom. We go to handset shops &buy which ever phone we like. Then go to carriers.. checkout the plans & buySIM.. Dont like the plan or rival carrier came up with a better plan????EASY .. just remove & replace the SIM.
Apple are trying to IMPOSE THEIR MODEL ON US riding on the hype iPhone hascreated in the US (yes it was a flop in Europe why Apple never talks about its sales in Europe).
Dont fall for the subsidized price of iPhone... CHECKOUT THE DATA PLANATTACHED TO ITS SIM ..they will recover the cost through ridiculous dataplans. Bill might come to around Rs 2500/month.(ATLEAST AMERICANS PAY THATMUCH)
Let me clear one thing though.. iphone is the best looking phone (its touchinterface is nothing like you have ever seen ), & best browsing experienceout there no doubt .... (& others are fast catching up..check out theandpostroid demo at Google IO 2008).... BUT AFTER A FEW DAYS IT ALL COMES DOWNTO FUNCTIONALITY...
Those of who buy it... You will be most happy for atmost a week... & then,MARK MY WORDS...YOU WILL START REGRETTING IT!!!
My advice...WAIT FOR HTC DREAM!! (powered by android). Still not convincedby then...by all means go for iPhone
...So friends lets spread this info to all our friends and help them in makinga wise decision..... & those of you who have bought unlocked versionsalready please share your experiences with others..

Aero also enables dynamic window animations, so that when you minimize a window to
the taskbar, it subtly animates to show you exactly where it went. This kind of functionality
was actually first introduced in Windows 95, but it has been made more subtle and
fluid in Windows Vista. Additionally, Aero enables Live Taskbar Thumbnails: When you

Online time 'is good for teens'

Surfing the internet, playing games and hanging out on social networks are important for teen development, a large study of online use has revealed. The report counters the stereotypical view held by many parents and teachers that such activity is a waste of time.More than 800 teenagers and parents took part in the three-year US project.

"They are learning the technological skills and literacy needed for the contemporary world," said the report's author, Dr Mimi Ito.

"They are learning how to communicate online, craft a public identity, create a home page, post links.

Windows Vista Aero

Windows Vista Aero is the premium user experience in Windows Vista and the one most
users will want to access. It provides a number of unique features.
First, Vista Aero enables the new Aero Glass look and feel in which the Start Menu,
taskbar, and all onscreen windows and dialog boxes take on a new glass-like translucent
sheen. In Figure 4-5, you can see how overlapping objects translucently reveal what’s
underneath.

Windows Vista Classic Interface

Like Windows XP, Windows Vista includes a user experience called Windows Classic that
resembles the user interfaces that Microsoft shipped with Windows 95, 98, Me, and 2000
(it most closely resembles Windows 2000). This interface is available on all Windows Vista
product editions, including Starter edition. Classic is included in Windows Vista almost
solely for businesses that don’t want to undergo the expense of retraining their employees
to use the newer user experiences.

Even though Microsoft markets Windows Classic as being identical to the Windows
2000 look and feel, the truth is that there are numerous differences, so users will still
require some training when moving to Windows Vista and Classic mode. For example,
the Start Menu and Explorer windows still retain the layouts that debuted with
Windows Vista, and not the styles you might be used to in Windows 2000. However,
you can fix this somewhat. To use the old Start Menu, right-click the Start button and
choose Properties. Then, select the option titled Classic Start menu and then click OK.
It’s a bit more complicated to use a Windows Explorer look and feel that is closer to
that of Windows 2000. To do so, open Computer from the Start Menu and then press
the Alt key to display the Classic menu (which is disabled by default in Windows
Vista). Select Folder Options from the Tools menu to display the Folder Options dialog.
Then, select the option titled Use Windows classic folders and click OK. Voilà!
Your system should now look a bit more like Windows 2000, as Shown below

(Secret)

If you work in the IT department of a business that is considering deploying
Windows Vista, you can actually roll out a feature called Classic Mode via Group
Policy (GP) that does, in fact, configure Windows Vista to look almost exactly like
Windows 2000. Classic Mode essentially combines the Classic user experience with
the secrets mentioned previously.

Microsoft’s Obscure Stash of Legacy Drivers

Even if the Vista Upgrade Advisor tells you that you need new drivers, and that they
aren’t known to be available, you still may have something that will work.
That something is called an XP driver. Yep, a driver that works fine under Windows XP
may also work fine under Vista, even though the Upgrade Advisor doesn’t say so.
Table 3-1 shows scores of drivers that Microsoft developers refer to as “XP drivers for
legacy devices which we believe to function well on Windows Vista.” These drivers, however,
won’t be included with Vista and the Upgrade Advisor may or may not say that
they’re compatible, in case your system already has one or more of them.
Sources within Microsoft report that, “For various reasons, these drivers will not be ‘in the
box’ for the final version of Vista.” If you’re having trouble getting Vista to work well with
a particular piece of hardware, and you can’t find a Vista-specific driver for it, you could
try locating and installing an XP driver as a last resort.
To install an XP driver, you’ll need to download it from a manufacturer’s site or have a
copy of the driver on a CD, a USB drive, or some other medium. You can then use Vista’s
Add Hardware control panel to try to write the new driver to your hard disk.
Be sure to copy the old driver to a safe location, such as a USB drive, in case the new
driver works worse than the old one did and you need to switch back.
The list in Table 3-1 includes drivers for a lot of Ethernet cards and Wi-Fi adapters, for
some reason. If your PC can’t connect to a wired network or can’t see your wireless router
after installing Vista, this list of XP drivers that Microsoft developers believe will work
under Vista could help you find software to correct the situation.
Our thanks to Wendy Stidmon of Microsoft for assembling the list of XP drivers that work
in Vista.

Choosing the Whole Enchilada—Vista Ultimate

You can use Tables 1-2 through 1-5 to compare those features of the lesser Vista versions
that come together in Microsoft’s priciest product: Vista Ultimate. To get it, you’ll pay a list
price of $60 to $100 more than Vista Business or $100 to $160 more than Home Premium.
Without knowing what your specific needs may be, it’s impossible for us to say whether
you’ll want or need this enormous package.
As we stated previously, the only serious reason to pay extra to get Vista Ultimate is if you
absolutely must have two features, one of which exists only in Home Premium (such as
Windows Media Center) and the other of which can only be obtained in Business or
Enterprise (such as domain login).
At the time of this writing, Microsoft promises to release a number of add-ons called the
Windows Ultimate Extras. These weren’t well defined at all, however, when we went to
press. You’ll have to be the judge of whether these extras are worth anything to you or
your business.
Of course, you might purchase Vista Ultimate just because you want everything Microsoft
has to offer, and cost is no object. If so—enjoy!

Summary
Windows Vista certainly offers a lot of choice when it comes to picking a product version,
but with a little know-how, you will be able to make the right choice, one that matches
both your needs and your budget. We’ve given you what you need to know to match a
Vista version to your needs. Now, you just need to figure out how much the upgrade is
going to cost. Remember that it’s often much cheaper to acquire a new Windows version
with a new PC, so if you’re going to be buying a new PC, be sure to get the right Vista
version at that time. We’ll look this option in Chapter 2.

Free Anonymous Web Surfing

Anonymous Free Surfing

Anonymous surfing is the ability to surf the Web without being tracked. By using "sniffers" somebody could find out your IP address, cookies, what's in your browser cache, what kind of computer you're using...they could even connect to your hard drive and access your private files, including passwords and banking information.

Web sites and other people can sniff out information about you including your IP address. You can be found and tracked using your IP address very easily. Your IP address gives hackers an entryway into your computer.

Anonymous, or proxy, servers work by retrieving Web pages for you. They hide your IP address and other important browsing information, so the remote server does not see your information but sees the proxy server's information instead.

Surfing with an anonymous proxy site/service is simple: all you do is enter in the URL you'd like to visit anonymously, and you'll be able to surf leaving virtually no trace that you were ever there. Basically, when you use an anonymous proxy and enter in the URL that you'd like to visit anonymously, the anonymous proxy retrieves the pages BEFORE they are delivered to you. This way, the IP address and other browsing information that the remote server sees does not belong to you - it belongs to the anonymous proxy. When you surf the internet, your computer lets every other computer know who it is by giving away information such as your ip address, type of browser and a ton of other information. The goal is to hide all this information from other computers and this is called anonymous surfing.

Every time you surf the web you leave traces of your Internet activity that can reveal your real identity. Any url you access can gather and record information about you such as your IP address, location, browser type, browser language, operating system you are using, web pages last visited and other information that you might want to keep confidential.

Hackers, identity thieves, spammers and other people who want to get access to your personal information can monitor your browsing habits and activities, spy upon you, steal personal information and exploit security holes in your system to cause damage to your computer.

There are literally hundreds of free anonymous proxies. It is estimated that 90% of all computers are infected with spyware that may allow criminals to learn passwords and bank account numbers—essentially giving them access to anything and everything on your computer. IP address (Internet Protocol address) is your internet identification number. Everyone has an IP address to communicate on the Internet, It's like a telephone number or mailing address. Using your IP it is possible to know your country, city, internet provider and even physical address. Hackers and identity thieves can use this information to steal personal information, spy upon you or cause damage to your PC.

While most sites use information about OS and browser to provide a better surfing experience, this information can also be used by hackers for virus attacks to get access to your hard drive, steal personal information or cause damage to your computer.

Cool place to start:  Guide to online privacy and anonymous web surfing and the most comprehensive list of working web-based proxies, updated daily.

Features Available in All Vista Versions

For completeness’s sake, features that exist in all versions of Vista are listed in Table 1-5,
in no particular order. If this table offers you all the Windows features you’ll ever want,
then Vista Home Basic may be enough for you.
This would particularly be true if you plan to use Vista solely to browse the Web and occasionally
check your e-mail. In that case, the improved Internet Explorer 7 and Windows
Mail programs—present in all Vista versions—might be adequate to serve your needs.
Microsoft, of course, hopes that the features of Home Basic are, well, too basic for you. If
so, you’ll have to pony up a higher amount for one of the pricier versions. We hope we’ve
presented in this chapter all the details you need to make an informed decision.

Microsoft Windows Vista Media Center

In those Vista versions that support it, Windows Media Center turns a PC into a DVD
player and digital video recorder all in one. (Media Player is included in Vista Home
Premium and Ultimate editions.)
In Vista, Media Center has been developed to support widescreen and high-definition
monitors. It works fine on older 4:3 displays but takes full advantage of greater capabilities
when present in the hardware found on a system (see Figure 24).
PCs that include a TV tuner enable users to watch, record, and pause live programming.
With multiple tuners, it’s possible to watch a program on one channel while recording
another program on a different channel.
Besides TV and motion pictures, Media Center also supports audio files and still photography.
You can direct slide shows and music playlists as well as watch live or recorded
video programming.

Simple Website Design Principles for Internet Marketing

An essential element of the success of any Internet Marketing campaign is the ability to not only generate traffic to your Website, but capturing the interest of the visitor once he's on your site. The are a number of techniques that the best Internet Marketing Strategies employ to ensure that their Website Design encourages a user to linger.
To a great degree all Internet marketing strategies - article marketing, blogging, search engine optimization and email marketing, depend on the quality of your Website design to close the sale. As you design and continually refine your Website, maintain constant focus on what you are trying to accomplish, what message you are trying to communicate. All the principles in the world are worthless without vigilance to your ultimate objective.
Here are five fundamental rules of thumb to observe to make sure your Website performs well.
1) Do not use splash pages
Splash pages are the first pages you see when you arrive at a website. They normally have a very beautiful image with words like 'welcome' or 'click here to enter'. In fact, they are just that -- pretty vases with no real purpose. Do not let your visitors have a reason to click on the 'back' button! Give them the value of your site up front without the splash page.
2) Do not use excessive banner advertisements
Even the least net savvy people have trained themselves to ignore banner advertisements so you will be wasting valuable Website real estate. Instead, provide more valuable content and weave relevant affiliate links into your content, and let your visitors feel that they want to buy instead of being pushed to buy.
3) Have a simple and clear navigation
You have to provide a simple and very straightforward navigation menu so that even a young child will know how to use it. Stay away from complicated Flash based menus or multi-tiered dropdown menus. If your visitors don't know how to navigate, they will leave your site.
4) Have a clear indication of where the user is
When visitors are deeply engrossed in browsing your site, you will want to make sure they know which part of the site they are in at that moment. That way, they will be able to browse relevant information or navigate to any section of the site easily. Don't confuse your visitors because confusion means 'I'm outta here'!
5) Avoid using audio on your site
If your visitor is going to stay a long time at your site, reading your content, you will want to make sure they're not annoyed by some audio looping on and on on your website. If you insist on adding audio, make sure they have some control over it -- volume or muting controls would work fine. If you analyze every aspect of your Website Design and ask the question - 'does this contribute to my ultimate objective?' - you're Website should evolve into a significant contributor for your Internet Marketing efforts.

How To Remove Spyware Free From Your Computer

The hot story in today’s internet world is that everyone is getting infected by a spyware program. Spyware and Adware programs go hand in hand. Spyware is a mallicious program which will enter your system and start spying you. Inheriting spyware on your computer may collect private details and record your online searching habits, or whatever you type on your keyboard. They will cause serious problems to your computer systm in general, sometimes even serious damage where you will have to buy a brand new computer! Spyware can also cause malfunctioning of the system and slows down your computer. Your computer should be Spyware Free at any cost.

Some of the precautionary methods to avoid spyware on your computer and to make it as Spyware free is to watch for the danger signs:

1. Provides a link to a specific spyware remover. A legitimate Windows warnings do not provide links to download anti spyware software.

2. Appears with colorful red and yellow caution and danger graphics. Beware of any biohazard signs.

3. The message hi-jacks your browser or redirects you to an unauthorized webpage.

4. The warning spyware message appears on your taskbar.

The above listed are the most common fake steps in which you can be misleaded to attract the spyware programs to your computer so that it can get infected with it. There are several methods to remove spyware and make your computer free from this. The first simple solution is to find an extensive search for the best spyware remover program. These programmes will scan your entire registry, hard drives and will give you a result. With the Spyware Remover, you can have them go to quaratine or delete it. Make sure the scan is done atleast 2 times. At times, the spyware will not be detected and cleaned in the first pass. Such nasty devils need a revamping scan and then re-cleaned.

The easy way to make your system Sypware free is to perform a check every week or atleast once every five days. How ever clean the network or the stand alone computer may be, you still need to perform the search and scan is needed. You will know if your computer is vulnerable to all these attacks at the end of a full scan search. Remember, a prevention is better than cure.
