PSP vs. iPhone Grudge Match

So, you want a pocket-sized entertainment device that can play movies, music, and games? Right now, the two top options for you are the iPhone and the PlayStation Portable -- and each device is hungrily eyeing the other's territory. While the iPhone has been out since 2007, only last summer, with the launch of the 3G iPhone and the App Store, did the device gain the ability to download applications and play dedicated games. The PSP was released in late 2004 in Japan and 2005 around the rest of the world.
Apple is aggressively pursuing the gaming market. It has released commercials that identify the iPhone and iPod Touch as gaming devices. This is hardly Apple's first push into gaming either, as it occasionally has paid lip service to Mac owners with gaming announcements and once dipped its toes into the dedicated console pool with the now-forgotten Pippin. But this is different. The support Apple has shown to gaming on the iPhone and the amount of interest sparked around the world should make Sony very nervous. Sony does not need another successful competitor for the PSP, as it already has ample competition from the Nintendo DS.
